Nickelodeon Digital Experience

Creating digital solutions for kids and their parents

Duration: 2 years 2 months (June 2013 – July 2015)

Challenges and Opportunities

Leading the design of an AI-powered internal tool used by executive and senior leadership to accelerate decision-making, optimize sales strategy, and enhance business visibility across the organization

My Role: Lead Designer

I had multiple roles on the Nick Digital team as digital designer, animator, and/or art director depending on each project. For redesigning the Nick digital experience, I led the design of mobile applications. I worked daily with across-functional team to create and oversee all aspects of the design, including UX and UI design, research and user-testing, and animation.

My Vision

My vision was to give kids an interactive, character-driven destination for the Nick and Nick Jr. websites that entertained and educated, and truly engaged them through play and discovery. I wanted to build a trustworthy relationship with the parent audience by clearly organizing the contents for both web and mobile experiences.

Process

Initial discovery and research focused on key areas and was executed using several different methods. I researched the competition and conducted user testing to understand how users navigated and explored, and why and how they consumed the content. I worked closely with the research team and early-learning experts to test every button and interaction with full color prototypes. I created initial concepts, storyboards, mockups, wireframes and UI with numerous ideation.

Gamification

When I created the games screen, I used my expert knowledge and passion for the game to give users a fun experience through UI and interactions. I realized that kids love touching the screens from the usability testing, and they preferred 3D button designs to 2D button. And they loved the interactive button with a normal stage and pushed stage. I approached this idea to create the “Alpha button,” which is touchable and gave a surprise moment with animation and sound. It also helped discoverability of the new TV shows while the users played and explored the games screen.

Solution

I created clear navigation and consistent look with the contents grid tile system on all websites and apps. I introduced the intuitive mobile design with the new mobile design system, including patterns and UI components for engaging the users.

Apple Watch

In addition to the design effort, I created an Apple Watch wearable experience for parents that can control turning the Nick Jr. app off and on, using a timer.
